So yesterday I made some flour tortillas like my Nana used to make. And today I thought I would make a little sweet treat that Nana would make us sometimes using the same tortilla dough. Bunuelos! If you don’t know what bunuelos are then I will explain: They are little delectable pieces of fried dough that you sprinkle (or douse) with cinnamon and sugar right after you pull them out of the frying pan. They are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. They are best served warm. A great way to use leftover dough or if you just want a simple inexpensive treat.
To make just roll out a tortilla to the thickness you desire. I make them about 1/16″ thick. Then cut them in to whatever shapes you want. Nana always made triangles, or a round tortilla quartered.
Heat up some vegetable oil in a pan and cook tortilla pieces until golden brown. They will puff up and will need to be flipped once. Go right from the pan into a large bowl. Sprinkle your cinnamon-sugar mixture and shake them around to fully coat.
All thats left is for you to pick how you will eat them! I like a large glass of milk or a nice cappuccino. Enjoy!
